For people planning overseas trips, the airfare is often the most expensive part of the trip. And yet, it’s the most vital part : how are you going to enjoy a trip overseas if you cannot even get there in the first place?
This post contains some hints that I use in planning my global holidays that make the hard part of finding inexpensive world airplane tickets just a little bit easier.
1) Consider the timing of your trip. If you would like to go to Europe, as an example, remember that a lot of folks will travel there during the summer. During those months, families go on vacations and students will travel because they are out of college. This is the top season for travel, and as such, airlines will have a tendency to charge more.
For Europe, consider travelling there in the fall or winter instead. Airlines are still flying there, but with the kids in class, there’s less leisure travel, less demand, and, accordingly, lower costs. In fact, it is not peculiar to see the same ticket from the US to Europe costs 1/2 of the price (or even less!) during the fall and winter as it does during the summer.
Before you purchase, research what the off-season and peak seasons are for your destination. If you are sufficiently flexible enough to travel during the off-season, there are often great deals to be had.
2) See whether staying longer will save on your airfare. Most inexpensive global airline tickets have minimum stay requirements, which means that staying a few days might be more expensive than staying five. Check to see whether adding an extra day or two to the length of your stay will lower the price of the ticket, but bear in mind that adding those additional days — and the extra price of food and lodging that come together with it — might offset the cost of the airline ticket.
3) Be flexible. This is, maybe, the most important thing you can do if you’re looking for inexpensive global airplane tickets. Suppleness is key : with the dates you travel, with the airline you choose, and so on. Even by moving your travel dates by a day in either direction, you could save hundreds of dollars due to the complexity of airline pricing.
By following these three tips, you could be well on your way to significant savings on your next international getaway.
